Millcreek Entrance Station
New Signage Posted & Widened Path

With the support of the County Bicycle Advisory Committee, the US Forest Service and Mayor Corroon, County Parks & Recreation placed the signage, widened the road and put in barriers to help with debris this October. The station employees indicate that riders are starting to notice the new signage, but still aren’t stopping. Everyone is hoping that once riders are aware of the new signs, they will start stopping.

Remember, bicycles MUST STOP at the Millcreek Entrance Station! As most of you probably remember this spring there was much controversy(ksl) over cyclists coming down out of Millcreek. Although cyclists do not need to pay when leaving the canyon they still need to come to a stop at the station.

Aside from the fact that it is a stop sign, and all vehicles need to obey traffic signs (yes, cyclists too), it is the safe and right thing to do. A passenger opening their car door into a cyclist traveling at 20+mph or a cyclist entering into the uphill traffic lane will eventually leave someone critically injured or worse. Whether cyclists are actually passing the station at 50mph as reported is un-verified, the perception still remains from the viewpoint of the motorists.

Bike advocates need everyone’s help on this. New signage has been placed reminding cyclists to stop, along with a reminder to motorists that bicycles are present and they don’t need to pay. The County has also generously widened and fixed the bike path around the station. Every time a cyclist flaunts the traffic laws, motorists get more irritated. If we want respect, we need to first give respect.

Obeying all traffic laws goes a long way in obtaining the support and cooperation of the motoring public. Situations like this which made the news in the spring cause huge rifts between the cycling community and the general public. The Millcreek stop sign issues was even brought up about hiking trails in Emigration canyon months after the news story, sort of elevated to "martyr" status amongst canyon residents. When advocates are in discussions about safety for cyclists, to much time is waited addressing a "few" bad apples.

Remember to do the right thing and always be a “Bicycle Ambassador” when on the road and trails.
